It's Summertime and the tomatoes are ripe!
The Pickwick Pharmacy & Soda Fountain hosts the Tomato Pie Contest each year during the Summer on Augusta celebration. On Saturday, July 25, 2015 from 2 to 4 pm the judges will decide who gets to claim the best southern style tomato pie in Greenville. This year we are happy to have Megan Heidlberg of WSPA, Chief of Police Ken Miller, Debbi Kaplan the 2014 First Place Winner and Jennifer Glover of Carolina Girl Cooks as our 2015 judges.
Many people ask the question - isn't a tomato pie just a pizza? The answer is no. A tomato pie is a southern tradition which many southerners may remember from summer vacations in the Carolinas. It's a savory, not sweet, pie filled with fresh tomatoes, basil and special filling. We hear that the secret is in your choice of tomato.
